Laurent Désiré, Offizier und Politiker in der Demokratischen Republik Kongo, * Moba (Provinz Shaba) 1940, ✝ (ermordet) Kinshasa 16. 1. 2001; studierte Philosophie in Frankreich, kehrte zu Beginn der 1960er-Jahre nach Kongo (Kinshasa) zurück, unterstützte Ministerpräsident Lumumba und beteiligte sich an regionalen Aufständen. Er führte, v. a. gestützt auf die im Oktober 1996 gebildete »Allianz demokratischer Kräfte« und mit Unterstützung v. a. Ugandas und der USA, 1996/97 mit seinen Truppen einen Guerillakrieg, der schließlich im Mai 1997 Mobutu Sese-Seko zur Aufgabe der Macht zwang. Kabila ernannte sich am 16. 5. 1997 zum Präsidenten (29. 5. 1997 vereidigt) des nun wieder Demokratische Republik Kongo genannten Staates; er fiel einem tödlichen Attentat zum Opfer.
